US States by Region

We created this US States by Region page as sort of quick reference for when you are searching for your next hiking and/or camping trip.

The West Region is defined by the Census Bureau as these 13 states:

Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Further defined into 2 smaller Divisions:

  • Mountain: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming
  • Pacific: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington

The Midwest Region is defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as these 12 states:

Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Further defined into 2 smaller Divisions:

  • East North Central: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin
  • West North Central: Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota

The Northeast Region is defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as these 9 states:

Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Further defined into 2 Smaller Divisions by the U.S. Census Bureau:

  • New England: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont
  • Mid-Atlantic: New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania

The South Region is defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as these 16 states and D.C. :

Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia (not a State, but on their list), Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee,Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

Further defined into 3 Smaller Divisions by the U.S. Census Bureau:

  • South Atlantic: Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia
  • East South Central: Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee
  • West South Central: Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas
